ExcellENT Global Health Education Programme

ExcellENT funds global health activities where sustainable change can be made. Our role is to support colleagues at our link institutions to set the agenda and to enable them to strengthen their local health system.

Since 2019, we have done this through our Global Health Education Programme (GHEP), which awards Travel Bursaries to clinicians at our link institutions, and through which we award Teaching Fellowships. We also work with our partners to provide the International Paediatric ENT and Anaesthesia Skills Course.

GHEP Teaching Fellowship

ExcellENT awards Global Health Education Programme Teaching Fellowships to adventurous and enthusiastic applicants. The Teaching Fellow(s) will support the provision of global health educational opportunities at our link institutions and beyond. Two International Paediatric ENT and Anaesthesia Skills Courses (iPEASC) are provisionally planned at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi and the Arusha Lutheran medical Centre (ALMC) in Arusha, both located in Tanzania.

Each single day course will be delivered in partnership with faculty from KCMC, ExcellENT, The Rhinology and Laryngology Fund and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Taught by both UK and international ENT and anaesthetic specialists, the course provides simulation and practical skills training to approximately 25 doctors, nurses and health practitioners in basic paediatric life support, paediatric airway skills, the care of critically ill children and ENT emergencies.

The Fellow will be expected to help plan, coordinate and deliver both courses as part of the team. They would also be expected to complete data collection and analysis in partnership with local and international faculty as per previously agreed research priorities for paediatric airway emergencies. Support for statistical analysis and qualitative interviewing can be provided.

International Paediatric ENT and Anaesthesia Skills Course (iPEASC)

The first-ever International Paediatric ENT and Anaesthesia Skills Course (iPEASC) was run at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), Moshi, Tanzania in November 2019. The goal of the course is to introduce healthcare professionals to common paediatric airway and ENT scenarios and to provide practical exposure through a series of workshops.

Senior faculty on the course included Professor David Howard, Professor Mike Rothera, Dr Peter Shija, Dr Desderius Chussi, Mr Ian Lilly and Dr Philbert Mtenga.

The group was supported by Miss Lulu Ritchie and Mr Andy Lau (current and previous AGA-ENT Karl Storz Fellows), Mr Tom Hampton and Dr Aleks Kotwica (Rhinology and Laryngology Research Fund Fellows), and also Dr Kenneth Mlay and Dr Denis Katundu, then senior residents at KCMC.

The course was delivered over one day to approximately 30 doctors and nurse practitioners and covered paediatric airway skills as well as the care of critically ill children. Demand was so strong that instructors had to provide a second course for the fifteen professionals who could not attend the first.

Since then, the course has been run regularly. Our vision is to support local healthcare professionals to expand the course to other units in the region.

Joint award winner: 2021 RCPCH International Child Health Group Research Award

Along with our charity partners and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital ENT Department, we aim to undertake a novel research project: the Paediatric Airway Course Outcomes in Moshi (PACOM) Study.

The funding will support the delivery of the iPEASC in 2021-22 as well as enhance recruitment and collaboration in this vital area.
